Greek government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis was asked today to comment on the results of Eurovision 2025 and the recent statement by Minister of Health Adonis Georgiadis, who said that “Israel is going through difficult times.”
Despite many public broadcasters and politicians across Europe questioning the results of the televote — which saw Israel claim first place — the Greek government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis expressed support, showing no intention of disputing the outcome. This stance may also reflect the position of ERT (the Greek national broadcaster), which falls under his political authority.
While not directly contradicting the Health Minister, Marinakis maintained a low profile and interpreted the Eurovision results through a musical rather than a political lens.
“Eurovision is a music competition. Artists and songs participate. The public and juries vote based on their own criteria. And indeed, the European public placed Israel first, according to how each individual chose to vote.”
He went on to reiterate the Greek government’s consistent support for Israel, reminding the public of the reasons the war in Gaza began.
“We’re not going to audit how people voted. We’ve made our position on the Middle East clear. We have a long-standing alliance with Israel, which — by Hamas and not by the Palestinian people — suffered an unprecedented and unjust attack. Even babies were taken hostage, and that’s how it all started.”
Regarding Minister Georgiadis’s comment that most countries’ juries are left-leaning and therefore didn’t vote for Israel, Marinakis distanced himself, saying:
“The juries awarded points based on their own criteria. This is not a process in which countries are judged based on political or geopolitical moves.”
It’s worth noting that Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis, following the Eurovision 2025 grand final, posted on social media:
“Across Europe, the public chose Israel as their top preference, and the artistic juries — always left-leaning, everywhere and here too — ranked it very low (we placed it unacceptably low). A complete divide between the public and the juries. Kudos to the people who were not swayed by leftist propaganda and supported the great Western democracy of the Middle East during these difficult times and in this contest.”
Meanwhile, when asked why Greece did not sign the joint statement by seven European leaders regarding Gaza and opposing the displacement of the Palestinian people, Mr. Marinakis responded:
“The letter is an initiative of individual member states and not of the European Council. Greece supports every humanitarian effort. At the EU Foreign Affairs Council, Greece offered to take in injured Palestinian children. On Thursday, at the UN Security Council in New York, a discussion will be held under the Greek Foreign Minister on the protection of civilians in war conditions.”
