Two weeks of Greek cinema will come to an end next week at Astor in Melbourne’s St Kilda, where the 29th Greek Film Festival will host its grand finale and Closing Night Party on Sunday, 27 October.
Attendees are promised a celebratory screening in honour of 1960s film-diva Mary Chronopoulou, protagonist of the Closing Night film, Gorgones and Magkes.
The legendary actress known for her captivating performances and glamorous screen presence and passed away in 2023 at age 90.
Following the screening, The Cats and the Canary will take on stage to lead celebrations in swinging ’60s vibes.
This year’s Closing Night Party “comes with a twist”, a media statement on the event states, not resisting the pun.
“We’re inviting guests to embrace the spirit of the ’60s and come dressed in their most dazzling vintage attire. From bold colours to funky patterns, it’s time to go all out and celebrate the era that defined fashion and music!”
The screening of Gorgones & Magkes is expected to set the perfect tone for the evening featuring colourful costumes, lively choreography and an infectious soundtrack of the golden age.
The film was chosen as a nostalgic favourite for generations of Greeks and a perfect tribute to Chronopoulou’s legacy.
It is one of the three Finos Films musicals by Giannis Dalianides she has appeared, winning audience hearts with both acting and performing.
Running until 27 October, the 29th Greek Film Festival promises an exceptional programme of films, including world premieres and special in-person Q&A sessions with visiting filmmakers. For more details, click here.
