Danis Koumartzis, a skilled craftsman, is carrying on a family tradition of crafting replicas of ancient Greek musical instruments, breathing life into relics of the past.
In a quiet village nestled in northern Greece, his family is bridging the gap between ancient and modern times, one musical note at a time.
Inspired by his father’s hobby, Koumartzis embarked on a journey to recreate these historical instruments 12 years ago. By studying ancient frescoes and vase paintings, he meticulously constructs replicas of lyres, kitharas, and other instruments that once filled the air with enchanting melodies.
“It’s a fascinating process,” Koumartzis explained, surrounded by the tools of his trade. “We take inspiration from the past and bring it into the present, giving life to instruments that have been silent for centuries.”
These handcrafted instruments have captured the attention of musicians, composers, and collectors worldwide. They have even made appearances on the silver screen, featuring in recent films like the remake of Ben Hur.
For young musicians like Giorgos Tsomeidis, playing an ancient Greek lyre is more than just a musical pursuit. “It’s a connection to our heritage,” he said. “When I play, I feel a sense of history, a connection to the past. It’s a way to explore our roots and imagine the future.”
