Greek Aussie Maree Mamalis hopes to represent Greece at Eurovision

Maree Mamalis, an 18-year-old vocalist from Melbourne, has submitted a song to ERT in Greece for the Eurovision 2025 national selection.

Some may know Maree from her participation on The Voice Australia in 2023, where she wowed audiences with her performance of Billie Eilish’s ‘Listen Before I Go’.

Maree’s voice earned her a spot in the top seven on Team Jason Derulo, and she quickly became a fan favourite, admired for her vocal range and stage presence.

Now she prepares to release her debut EP, looking to take her music to new heights. It is from this upcoming project that she is submitting a song to be considered to represent Greece in Eurovision.

She is thrilled to have the opportunity, a chance to share her music and cultural pride with an international audience.

“Oh gosh, it would mean everything. It’s such a massive opportunity and honour to be able to represent your country in something that’s so big over in Europe,” Maree told Neos Kosmos.

“It would just be such an honour to be able to show myself as an artist and my first ever original song to such a large audience – it would be absolutely amazing and just so surreal.

“Even having me as a thought to be able to represent Greece is just massive.”

Maree, whose father was born in Greece and mother in Australia, of Greek descent, describes the song as an anthem of empowerment about reclaiming control in the face of a one-sided relationship.

The song, which fuses modern pop sounds with a touch of her Greek heritage through the inclusion of the bouzouki is a blend of contemporary pop and cultural pride.

For Maree, this is more than just a career opportunity—it’s a dream come true, a way to honour her heritage and showcase her talent on one of the world’s biggest stages.

If that opportunity does come, the magnitude of it is not lost on Maree.

“It’s a big thing and it puts a bit of pressure on you especially because I wasn’t born in Greece and say I do get the opportunity to represent Greece, I’m sure people will have very mixed opinions about it and that’s fine,” she said.

“But I guess a show like The Voice kind of trains you to just focus on yourself and what you’re doing and just not really worry about if people have got not so nice things to say.

“It’s also nice to see the nice things that people say as well but it does put a bit of pressure – you’re just this one person representing a whole country.”

Other Greek Australians who have submitted songs for the competition include Leea Nanos who competed at Eurovision – Australia Decides 2019 and in 2022 as a songwriter with her song ‘Bite Me’ sung by Aussie girl group G-Nat!on.

VASSY, the first woman to win an ICON Award, has also confirmed with Neos Kosmos that she has entered a song, having been reached out to many times this year.

She said it will make her family very proud.
