Holidaymakers in Greece are being warned to brace for a turbulent weekend as Storm Cassandra approaches. Severe weather warnings are in place, with rain, thunder and lightning predicted.
The storm has already affected northern Italy and parts of the Western Balkans. It is expected to hit Greece on Friday, October 4.
An emergency bulletin has been issued by Greece’s national weather service EMY. It said the storm will mainly impact western and northwestern Greece.

This includes the Ionian Islands, Epirus, the western mainland, and the northwestern Peloponnese, Express reports. Offiicials have said that Storm Cassandra will not be as intense as it was in neighbouring countries.
There will also be a marked drop in temperatures. As the storm progresses, it may also affect Eastern Macedonia, Thrace, and the islands of the northeastern Aegean.
There, brief storms could occur as the weather system begins to calm on Saturday, October 5. Tourists already in Greece or planning to visit over the weekend are advised to monitor local weather updates.
They should also exercise caution when engaging in outdoor activities. Popular tourist destinations in the affected regions may experience disruptions, leading to possible changes in travel plans and activities.
Local authorities are on high alert and are prepared to respond to any adverse conditions due to the storm. Emergency services are also warning people to take necessary precautions, such as avoiding travel during the severe weather and securing outdoor belongings.
