Greece squad in classy charity gesture after Scotland win

Steve Clarke‘s side were beaten 3-0 at Hampden in the second leg of the play-offs and relegated to League B despite winning the first leg 1-0 in Greece.

The entire Greek squad had already agreed a bonus to be shared of £800,000 if they won promotion with their own FA.

And Greek shipping tycoon Marios Iliopoulos – who is the owner of AEK Athens and a shareholder in Juventus – was so impressed with the national team’s performance in Glasgow, he personally donated a further £200,000 into the pot as a gesture of goodwill.

But the Greek players immediately announced they would distribute the windfall among local charities.

Their squad put out a statement which said: “As players of the national team, we feel the need to thank the Federation for immediately rewarding our progress in the Nations League.

“We would also like to express our thanks to Mr. Iliopoulos for his initiative to offer an additional bonus to our team.

“We have decided to allocate it to a charitable foundation that we will indicate in the coming days.

“It is our fundamental obligation, after all, to return the support we receive and to assist in the broader social role of football.”
