During joint statements at the Maximos Mansion with European Council President António Costa, Greece sent a clear message through the SAFE Initiative that countries which threaten EU member states are barred from taking part. This reinforces Europe’s commitment to security and regional stability.
Indirectly referring to Turkey, the Greek Prime Minister stressed that such countries must establish good neighborly relations with Europe while upholding its core principles. In addition, eligibility for the SAFE Initiative depends on respecting these fundamental European values.
Strategic position and defense industry opportunities
Greece highlighted its strategic location as a bridge between Europe and the Middle East and described the defense industry as “a major opportunity” for job creation.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister backed the creation of a common European funding mechanism to support investments in key defense capabilities. As a result, Europe can coordinate more effectively on security matters while boosting economic opportunities.
European Council backs joint defense funding
President Costa agreed that shared financing is essential to strengthen European defense. “The SAFE program is an important step, but more is needed,” he said.
“It’s not just about spending more, but spending smarter,” Costa added. EU member states must therefore focus on efficiency and impact rather than solely on the size of their budgets.
Sovereignty and regional security
The Greek Prime Minister praised Poland for defending the EU’s eastern borders against violations of its airspace. He added that Europe must remain firm against revisionism: “No violation of our sovereignty or sovereign rights can be tolerated.”
Consequently, the SAFE Initiative reinforces the principle that European security cannot be compromised.
Focus on Ukraine and the Middle East
On Ukraine, Greece emphasized support for EU–US coordination to end the war through peace talks. Importantly, any solution must adhere to international law, respect established borders, and acknowledge Ukraine’s robust deterrent capabilities.
Regarding the Middle East, Greece expressed concern over violations of Qatar’s sovereignty and underscored its commitment to ceasefire negotiations. At the same time, the country provides humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza and calls for avoiding further escalation.
