February 2025 will go down in meteorological records as one of the coldest months in Greece over the past 15 years, with temperatures consistently below seasonal norms across the country.
According to data from the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) and its Meteo.gr network of 53 meteorological stations, which have been operational since 2010, the average maximum daily temperatures in all regions of Greece fell below the normal seasonal levels when compared to the 2010-2019 period.
Regional Temperature Trends
The February 2025 Meteo map highlights the deviations in average maximum temperatures across different geographical regions. The data revealed that this was the second coldest February since 2010 for most of Greece, with the exception of Western Greece, the Ionian Islands, and the Peloponnese, where it ranked as the fifth and third coldest, respectively.
The most significant negative temperature deviations were recorded in the Aegean Islands, Central Greece, Thessaly, and Northern Greece, indicating a widespread cold spell.
Athens and Thessaloniki Experience a Harsh February
Athens recorded an average maximum temperature deviation of -2.7°C, with 17 out of the 28 days of the month falling below the seasonal average. In Thessaloniki, conditions were even colder, with 23 days registering below the 2010-2019 norm, and an overall monthly maximum temperature deviation of -2.5°C.
Despite the bitterly cold February, forecasts indicate a sharp contrast in the coming days, as temperatures are expected to rise significantly, bringing an early taste of summer to Greece.
