A state-of-the-art digital museum dedicated to the historic battleship Georgios Averof is set to bring Greece’s naval legacy to a global audience.

The Region of Attica has invited the Greek Ministry of National Defense to lead the 1.6 million euros initiative, which will merge advanced technology with cultural heritage to preserve the story of one of the nation’s most iconic warships.

Attica Governor Nikos Hardalias has already signed the invitation to the ministry for the creation of the museum, which will form part of the Attica Regional Operational Program 2021–2027 and is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund.

“This Digital Museum will honor a legendary vessel and serve as a powerful educational tool, connecting future generations with Greece’s maritime history,” Hardalias said.

For more than a century, the battleship Averof has symbolized independence and naval power, having played a decisive role in the Balkan Wars and securing its place in modern Greek history.

The new digital museum will transform how visitors experience the vessel, both online and in person, through immersive technologies and interactive storytelling.

“The G. Averof is linked to some of the most defining moments in modern Greek history. Preserving and sharing this heritage is a national priority,” said Defense Minister Nikos Dendias.
