Greece will provide a lifelong deafness allowance, extending the previously age-restricted benefit to individuals of all ages. The announcement was made by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during a visit to the National Foundation for the Deaf in Athens on Monday.
Until now, the state deafness allowance of €391 per month was only available to children aged 0-18 and retirees over 65.
“This injustice is now a thing of the past,” Mitsotakis said. “All deaf individuals will now receive the allowance, regardless of age. Our goal is to implement policies that are truly fair, fully inclusive, and tailored to the specific nature of each form of disability.”
He added that additional measures to support the deaf community will be announced after Easter, including initiatives to enhance access to information on public television through expanded subtitling.
“Each day, we are working toward a more just and inclusive society– one that no longer treats our fellow citizens with disabilities as second-class citizens,” he said.
