What happened to Greece during World War II? In this video you’re going to learn about life in Axis-occupied Greece in WW2. When war came to Greece the country was under the 4th of August Regime, led by General Ioannis Metaxas. On 28 October 1940 the Greco-Italian War started. The Greek Army repulsed the Italian invasion. In April 1941 the German invasion of Greece (the Battle of Greece) began. The Greek Army fought along side Commonwealth Forces but the Germans prevailed. Despite stubborn resistance they also achieved victory after the Battle of Crete. The Axis occupation of Greece saw Greece being partitioned. Greece saw a terrible famine (Great Famine). A puppet government (Hellenic State) was installed headed by Georgios Tsolakoglou. From 1943 pro-German Security Battalions were raised. The Greek Resistance in WW2 consisted of many groups: the EAM-ELAS; EDES and EKKA.

Why Greece wasn't counted as a quarantor power in Germany in the end of the war even though we gave the allies their first victory against Italy and resisted 219 days against Albanians, Italians, Germans and Bulgarians and the super power France only weeks 😢. Englands thank you was to start meddling in Greece s affairs and stirring up the Communists and Nationalist by giving weapons to both sides and instead of selebrating the end of the war in 45 our civil war ended 1949😢😢?
Why my beautiful heroic country that gave nothing but good to the world is always the one that is sold out by friends and experience the worst retaliations from enemies?😢
Η ελληνες δεν ξεχνουν
Thank you Stefan for this great video. Non-biased, fact-focused, easy to follow and in a reasonable length. I just subscribed to your channel.
Please read "Οι Δωσίλογοι" by historian Menelaos Charalambides
Major party of EDES gorillas joined traitor Greek gov "Ευζωνικά Τάγματα" and clashed firstly with remained EDES party by killing head officers. Then headed towards ELAS by classified all ELAS as communists. That was the moto of Germans and the traitor Greek gov against anyone who wasn't a traitor
I wrote a paper in high school about Greece and WW2. I read a ton of news paper articles. The Nazi's killed a lot of villagers but the Greek kept killing SS officers.
Hi , you forgot to mention EEE and George Poulos and Poulos Verband. ⚡️
Great work Stefan. As you see in Greece our national days ,28 october and 25 of march, are the days the wars started, not ended.Greeks celebrate the begining of the war for freedom.
my grandpas dad was a coach driver stationed in Greece. He transported food from Garrison to Garrison. He was nearly shot by partisans but his Greek companion who was tasked to accompany him saved him as he persuaded the partisans of my Greatgrandfather being an harmless guy. Fun Fact my Grandpa used to tell: he ate so much Grapes there that he was not able to eat them after the war.
I am Chian. Writing family history about WWII and Chios. More specifics about the island would be very helpful for my resources.
The country went through very rough time in WWII during German occupation as famine went through and people were dying on the road and many other things.
thank for this video. How was ww2 in Dodecanese islands?
We fought WW2 on our own and our armed forces were in shocking condition. We took on Germany and Italy who were the two super powers at that time, we suffered…. but we never gave up.What annoyed us the most wasn't the germans or Italians because they made it clear clear to us, we said no!!!! and the war was on for young and old. What annoyed us was the two coward nations that came in later on the backs of the axis forces. They were Albania and Bulgaria these two coward nations didn't come in from the start but waited like vultures to come in and put the boot in to us when we were virtually decimated. So we fought four nations eventually but the Bulgarians who were supposed to be our orthodox Christian brothers ended up worse than the germans and Italians. We forgave all of them in 1953 but it looks like the germans still had something against us and we saw it decades later with the economic crisis.
I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW ABOUT THE GERMANS THAT REMAINED ON CRETE AFTER THE MAINLAND FORCES WERE EVACUATED!!
Greece has always been screwed by everyone 😢
why were there greek soldiers in israel in 1942-1943
For sure greeks always western slaves… only russia say NO …..
Greece's resistance lasted longer than all the countries combined.
Thank you for making this video. ❤
There were also some free Greek forces that fought alongside the western allies outside the country. It would be interesting to see what they did during the war.
Thank you
My Grandfather and Grandmother from both sides was in this war. Lots of stories in our family about how difficult and cruel the Germans where. Granddad was in the resistance got caught by the Germans was hung with meat hooks from his arms as a and example. He then managed to escape thanks to his wife and mother and the resistance. History doesn’t cover these events well enough, luckily family do ❤
Sadly, Greek history is mostly about in fighting. Brutal and senseless.
I have very much enjoyed all of the videos on this channel. There does not seem to be much written on WWll in the Balkans and Greece compared to other theatres of the war. Thank you!
Love live the memory Lela Karagianni..grandmother
I would love to hear more about the Greek civil war. Thank you!
Motto for WW2 nations
1) Italy- All talk no action
2) Germany – Don’t blow you’re load before you even get your tip wet
3) Japan- at the end of it all, we truly did become the Empire of the Rising Son
1) US- stolen valor isn’t stolen if you rewrite history
2) England- please Mr. Roosevelt, may I have some more?
3) Soviet Union- yeah you won, but was it really worth 20MILLION bodies?
