In a significant step toward modernising its military capabilities, Greece’s National Defence Minister Nikos Dendias and Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos signed an agreement on Monday for the deployment of ‘Thorax,’ an advanced threat-assessment system designed to strengthen the country’s armed forces.
The signing ceremony, held at the Development Ministry, marks a key milestone in the government’s ambitious ‘Agenda 2030‘ plan, which Dendias hailed as a pathway to creating “the strongest Armed Forces Greece has ever had.”
The ‘Thorax’ system, funded with €48.95 million from the European Union’s Recovery Fund, will harness big data to analyse and prioritise potential threats, providing critical support to Greece’s defence and security operations. The project is a collaborative effort involving contractors Nova and Cosmos Business Systems, with government officials and company representatives present at the event.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dendias emphasised the system’s cutting-edge capabilities. “Thorax collects data from all our sensors—radar, aircraft, land units, unmanned aerial vehicles, observatories, electronic systems—and integrates information from multiple agencies, including the Armed Forces, Hellenic Police, Port Authority, and Civil Protection,” he said. “It sorts, prioritises, and processes this data using artificial intelligence, delivering a sophisticated product to the appropriate unit or agency for decision-making, while also streamlining operational processes.”
Development Minister Theodorikakos echoed Dendias’ enthusiasm, highlighting the broader implications for national security. “We are enhancing the defence and safety of both Greece and its people,” he stated. He also announced plans for a forthcoming development law aimed at bolstering border regions, noting, “The best long-term and strategic defense comes from economic growth, investments, and job creation in border areas.” Theodorikakos added that Thorax would empower security forces along Greece’s frontiers, enabling them to perform their duties more effectively and securely.
The initiative aligns with Greece’s broader goals of addressing demographic challenges, such as the low birth rate, and reducing social and regional disparities. With ‘Thorax’ set to revolutionise threat management, the country is positioning itself as a stronger, more resilient player on the international stage.
