God of War Side-Story Set in Greece Rumoured For This Year

A side-story in the God of War franchise set in Greece is rumoured to arrive this year. According to reliable leaker and insider Jeff Grubb, Sony’s first-party Santa Monica Studio is working on a side-story that will take Kratos back to ancient Greece. However, he stressed that this won’t be a full game as it’s not the developer’s next big title.

The rumour first surfaced over the weekend when Jeff Grubb, who has a good track record of reporting on inside information accurately, revealed that God of War will receive a side-story project this year that will be set in Greece. In the same breath, Grubb also shut down earlier rumours about a potential remastered collection, stating that he hadn’t heard anything about it. “Everyone keeps asking about this, so I’ve tried to find out more: There’s still a Greek God of War thing coming out this year, but it’s not a remaster collection. It’s a new side-story project,” he said.

Grubb later doubled down on the side-story rumour, stating that it will feature Kratos. Beyond that, not much else is known about this mystery side adventure. Some fans speculate that it will be smaller in scope akin to God of War Ragnarok‘s free Valhalla DLC while others think it’s a more substantial side game like Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

Taking Kratos back to Greece, the era where the series started, seems like a natural step for the franchise in celebration of its 20th anniversary this year. The modern God of War games were both set in Norse mythology, though fans yearned for some callbacks to Kratos’ past – they definitely received them in the games and in more abundance with Valhalla, but stepping back into Greek mythology is a bold, albeit crowd-pleasing move, if Grubb’s report is true.

In related news, Amazon is moving forward with its live-action God of War series which was recently greenlit for two seasons.
