George and Nina Papanikolaou’s N.C. Restaurant The Greeks Real Greek

At The Greeks restaurant in Wilmington, North Carolina, diners may think they’re getting Greek-American food-style Greek dishes but the owners, George and Nina Papanikolaou, cook the same way he learned in Greece.

That even includes new menu items that started as special and he makes lamb chops served with lemon potatoes and a genuine Greek salad. “It’s been so popular, we now have them every single day,” Nina told Star News.

Her mother, Roula Papanikolaou, makes her traditional favorites, including pastitsio, where she layers noodles with ground beef and a creamy béchamel sauce and her moussaka and avgolemono soup, made with chicken, lemon and egg sauce.

“One of the other things we’ve added isn’t really Greek, but it’s been really popular,” Nina said. “The burgers.” But George makes the patties by hand, combining beef and lamb and one version has a Greek touch – spicy feta dip. The Olympus Burger comes with two patties, a portion of gyro meat, grilled onions, melted cheese and the special Sparta sauce.
