The Very Rev. Archimandrite Stephen Mazaris passed away on Sunday March 16, 2025.
He was born in Weirton, WV on August 14, 1933, to Nicholas and Catherine Primikiri Mazaris, who emigrated to the United States from Asia Minor.
He is preceded in death by his brother, George.
Fr. Stephen grew up loving basketball, golf, and Greek music. An avid reader, Fr. Stephen amassed a great collection of books, as well as icons over the years. He could speak on many topics, and he was always welcomed wherever he went.
Fr. Stephen was ordained as a deacon in 1985, and was ordained to the priesthood in 1986. He was then made an archimandrite in 1992. Although he retired from Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church (New Kensington, PA) in 2019, after 20 years of faithful service, he also served the parishes in Martins Ferry, OH, Canton, OH, Wheeling, WV, and Wilkes-Barre, PA.
After his retirement, Fr. Stephen joined St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral (Pittsburgh, PA), and would also spend time at Dormition Greek Orthodox Church (Oakmont, PA), where many of his parishioners attended once Annunciation closed.
Fr. Stephen will be remembered fondly by both parishioners and his brother priests alike. Fr. Stephen was known for his loving heart and healing spirit, and many benefited from them. He was also a gifted liturgist, conducting prayerful worship whether serving alone or with other priests.
Visitation will be Friday at the All Saints Greek Orthodox Church 3528 West Street Weirton, W V from 4 PM until 6 PM.
A Divine Liturgy will begin at 9 AM on Saturday followed by the Funeral Liturgy at 11:00 AM at All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, Weirton.
Interment will follow at Union Cemetery in Steubenville, OH
In lieu of flowers, donations in Fr. Stephen’s memory can be made to All Saints Greek Orthodox Church in Weirton, WV, Dormition Greek Orthodox Church in Oakmont, PA, or St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Pittsburgh, PA .
He is now peacefully resting in paradise in the presence of God and all the Saints. May His Memory Be Eternal. Arrangements are under the direction of the Greco- Hertnick Funeral Home, Weirton.
