Former The View co-host desperate to replace Kimberly Guilfoyle as US ambassador to Greece

Former The View co-host Debbie Matenopoulos has revealed she wants to replace Kimberly Guilfoyle as US ambassador to Greece.

Matenopoulos, 51, was only 22 years old when she was cast on The View for its first season in 1997.

She starred on the morning show for two years before she left, and in the years since then she’s worked on a series of shows like Good Day Live, E!’s The Daily 10 and The Insider, among other things.

But now, the former TV host may be venturing into politics, as she has put out a public plea to become the next US ambassador to Greece following Guilfoyle’s resignation.

Matenopoulos took to Instagram this week to explain why she’s a good fit for the position amidst the shocking news.

The journalist shared a lengthy video detailing her ‘qualifications,’ which ranged from being able to speak Greek to ‘understanding’ the country and its ‘people.’

‘Hi friends, in the wake of Kimberly Guilfoyle resigning as US ambassador to Greece, I have a few thoughts. I would personally like to make a campaign as to why I would be a great US ambassador to Greece,’ she said.

‘Number one, I speak the language. [Greek] was actually my first language before I spoke English.’

Matenopoulos went on to explain that her ‘entire family’ lives in Greece and that she has both a Greek and American passport.

‘I own homes in Greece, I travel there every single summer and spend quite a bit of time there so I understand the politics,’ she continued.

‘I understand the government, I understand the people. I have many connections and I love the country.

‘I believe that the United States and Greece can have even better relations than we already do. We have great relations but I think they can be improved on even more.’

She also pointed out that she has written two ‘very successful’ Greek cookbooks, and launched a Greek skincare line over the years.

‘I basically scream from the rooftops, “I am Greek, hear me roar. Our country is the best,”‘ she said with a laugh.

‘You don’t need any qualifications really to be a US ambassador to any country. You don’t need a college degree or diplomatic background, you don’t need a life in politics.

‘You just need to be an entrepreneur, a successful business woman or business man, a political donor and you have to be appointed or nominated by the president and approved by the US senate.

‘This is my plea to the president and the senate and the people of America and Greece. Please let me represent you as your new US ambassador to Greece.’

In the caption, Matenopoulos also highlighted some of her past accomplishments and career highs.

She wrote: ‘Qualifications: New York University Journalism degree, hand picked by arguably the most important influential female journalist of all time Barbara Walters to be on The View straight out of college, 30 years experience on live television and public facing persona, [can] speak, read and write in Greek, spends nearly every summer since birth in Greece, loves America and Greece equally and wants to deepen and improve relations between both of my homelands for future generations.’

‘I’m just gonna leave this right here,’ she added.

The unraveling began last week when the Daily Mail exclusively reported that the State Department had opened a formal investigation into the former Fox News star amid scrutiny of her allegedly extraordinary demands for travel, dining, money and other perks.

Text messages leaked by a pro-Trump donor showed the Greek ambassador seeking a $100,000 payment for a credit card bill before she even began her diplomatic role.

The firestorm of accusations against Guilfoyle eventually led to the Trump administration calling for her resignation this week.

In a statement posted to X this week, Guilfoyle insisted the accusations against her are ‘false,’ and vowed to ‘vigorously defend’ her name and reputation.
