Once again, I find myself (in my humble opinion) at the greatest venue in the world, the Greek Theatre. I’ve said it a million times before, but it’s always the most beautiful and serene venue to see one of your favorite artists perform. On Friday night, Father John Misty took to the Greek Theatre stage tucked into the trees, serenading us all with his wonderfully composed indie/country/folk ballads.
It is truly unreal to me the way his music translates live; the thought and the detail that went into this tour is undeniable. About seven other people on stage (I think I counted correctly), helping to make the gorgeous songs that critique the world and society come to life in a sonic wave that rattled through my entire body.
Behind all the talent was a beautiful curtain with a black hole slowly forming as each song played on; making for a pretty good metaphor fit for the topics Father John Misty addresses. His stage presence was commanding; he wanted you to look and laugh, and his banter with the crowd played into the themes of his discography. As he sauntered and occasionally stumbled back and forth in his well-tailored suit, he furthered the richness of his sonic storytelling. Each moment in between songs felt like a moment spent with a friend, prolonging a bit between the two of you.
Mahashmashana is a beautifully composed album that crescendos with strings, woodwind instruments, and emotions, and being able to see almost the entire album live on this tour was an absolutely amazing opportunity.
