Evangelos Marinakis and ALTER EGO MEDIA, one of Greece’s leading media and entertainment groups, will support Greek wrestler Georgios Kougioumtzidis on his road to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Kougioumtzidis became world champion in freestyle wrestling two months ago in Zagreb, Croatia, the first Greek wrestler ever to earn such a title. The initiative marks yet another concrete contribution by Marinakis to Greek sports. With long-standing support for clubs, sporting institutions, and Greek champions, Marinakis has repeatedly demonstrated his commitment to backing young athletes, promoting excellence, and advancing values tied to the Olympic spirit.
The sponsorship is part of the Hellenic Olympic Committee’s program “Adopt an Athlete on the Road to Los Angeles,” launched by Committee President Isidoros Kouvelos to strengthen Greece’s top athletes.
During his meeting with Kougioumtzidis, Marinakis said, “Georgios is a remarkable young man, an athlete with integrity, determination, and great potential. Greece needs protagonists like him. His efforts should never be limited by financial or logistical obstacles. I will stand by him through to Los Angeles, and I hope he reaches his dream, the top of the Olympic Games.”
On his part, Kougioumtzidis expressed deep gratitude for the support: “It is a tremendous honor to have the trust and backing of Mr. Marinakis. It gives me the strength to continue with even greater focus. I promise to work hard and represent Greece in the best possible way at the 2028 Olympic Games.”
Kouvelos praised the decision, noting, “Vangelis Marinakis is a man of sport who has consistently and generously supported every effort that promotes its values. He will now stand beside Giorgos Kougioumtzidis through to the Olympics, and I am certain that with this support, Kougioumtzidis will make all Greeks proud in Los Angeles.”
The monthly financial support is expected to play a crucial role in the wrestler’s preparation, ensuring he has the resources and conditions needed to remain among the world’s elite.
