The Diane Ventura-directed documentary charting the iconic Filipino band’s history goes global

MANILA, Philippines – Eraserheads: Combo on the Run won the Best International Feature Documentary award at the 2025 Ierapetra International Documentary and Film Festival held in Crete, Greece.

Directed by Maria Diane Ventura, who personally accepted the award at the ceremony, the documentary beat out 38 other productions from countries like Italy, Spain, Hungary, the US, and Portugal, among others, to take home the title.

It was one of the few Asian nominees in the International Feature Length Documentaries division — rivaling documentaries from Hong Kong, India, Iran, China, and Turkey.

Eraserheads: Combo on the Run was also the closing film for the Greek film festival.

Ventura expressed that it is always an honor for her to be able to represent the Philippines “in any capacity.”

“As a filmmaker, I’m happy if even one person connects with our work, so it’s incredibly thrilling and inspiring to see our film resonate beyond our shores,” she said.

“We set out to tell a story close to our hearts, and somehow it found its way across oceans… It’s a privilege to carry our country’s voice and music from the Eraserheads, no less,” the filmmaker added.

Earlier in July, the documentary also became the first Filipino-produced film to be screened at the San Diego Comic-Con.

According to a press release sent to Rappler, Eraserheads: Combo on the Run is in talks for a theatrical release overseas.

Eraserheads: Combo on the Run charts the eventful history of the legendary Filipino band — from their formation to their disbandment and eventual reunion — putting the spotlight on its members Ely Buendia, Raymund Marasigan, Buddy Zabala, and Marcus Adoro.

The annual Ierapetra International Documentary and Film Festival is now on its 12th edition. It was founded in 2014 by journalist and filmmaker Eleni Vlassi, and hosts a series of film screenings, workshops, lectures, seminars, art exhibitions, and performances, among other activities.
