Athens, April 27, 2025 – Greek pop sensation Eleni Foureira, renowned for her electrifying 2018 Eurovision performance of “Fuego,” revealed she was approached to represent Spain in a subsequent Eurovision Song Contest.
disclosure came during her recent appearance on the podcast Daily Kous Kous, with further details shared by journalist Yiannis Poulopoulos on the Greek television show Super Katerina.
According to Poulopoulos, Spain’s state television channel extended the offer to Foureira following the massive success of “Fuego” in the country. “Eleni had a huge impact in Spain with ‘Fuego.’ She and her partner, Alberto Botía, who is of Spanish descent, were a beloved couple featured across Spanish media,” Poulopoulos stated. The proposal aimed to capitalize on her popularity and stage charisma to boost Spain’s Eurovision prospects.
However, the timing proved unfortunate. Discussions around her potential return to the Eurovision stage envisioned a grand performance in a large stadium, a plan derailed by the restrictions of the coronavirus pandemic. “Eleni was at the absolute peak of her career,” Poulopoulos explained. “She couldn’t fully leverage the success of ‘Fuego’ due to the pandemic, which was incredibly unlucky for her.”
Foureira, who represented Cyprus in 2018 and finished second, has yet to confirm whether she would consider future Eurovision opportunities. Her international career, briefly paused by the pandemic, continues to thrive, with fans eagerly awaiting her next move.
