ATHENS – Aggeliki Toubanaki and Ilias Doumanis present their innovative project, the electronic jazz drums-and-voice duet ‘Drums & Voice Jazztronica Duet’, on Thursday, May 22, 9 PM, at Theatre of the NO in Athens. This musical duo, formed in 2014, aims to deconstruct the traditional roles of percussion and voice in music.
Using the human voice, drums, and modern technologies such as live looping, sound design, and electronic media, the two artists create layered soundscapes in real time. Their music balances between jazz, experimental composition, polyrhythms, and multicultural influences, infused with improvisation and themes that comment on contemporary social and political realities.
Aggeliki Toubanaki, vocalist, vocal educator, researcher, producer, PhD in Molecular Oncology – Medical School Athens University, explores extended vocal techniques and traditional idioms, blending improvisation with an interdisciplinary approach.
Ilias Doumanis, drummer, composer, educator, and mixed-media practitioner, investigates the fusion of acoustic sound and drumming with technology through composition and orchestration.
Their artistic approach is in dialogical and synthetic relationship with the performing, audiovisual, and visual arts. They have collaborated with photographer Giorgos Vitsaropoulos (video projections) and comic artist Soloup (live drawing), and composed the original score ‘Big Bad Wolf’, inspired by the graphic novel ‘The Collector’. They have also worked with acclaimed musicians such as Dimitris Papadopoulos (trumpet), Lefteris Andriotis (lyra), Pantelis Stoikos (trumpet), Vangelis Paraskevaidis (vibraphone), and Dimitris Belos (music industry programmer).
With many years of presence in major cultural institutions and festivals such as: Technopolis Athens Jazz Festival, SNFCC, Preveza Jazz Festival, Tinos Jazz Festival, Patras Jazz Festival, Jazz Full Moon Festival, Fougaro, Benaki Museum, Sofar Sounds, Athens Voice Festival, Six D.O.G.S., Philippos Nakas Conservatory, Numismatic Museum — and in 2020 they represented Greece at the international festival Athens Music Week (‘Showcases’).
