Born Theodore Peter James Kinnaird Taptiklis, the actor has Greek heritage through his paternal grandfather, Dr. Nicholas Taptiklis, a Greek refugee who fled to Syria during World War II. His surname, Taptiklis, is a nod to his Greek roots. While James is one-quarter Greek, his ancestry also includes English and Scottish lineage, with his mother’s family originating from Glasgow, Scotland.
