Djokovic family brings ATP tournament to Athens – and it’s ‘here to stay’

Djordje Djokovic, brother of tennis superstar Novak Djokovic, declared, at a press conference Wednesday in Athens, that the newly relocated ATP 250 tournament in the Greek capital “is here to stay.”

Highlighting strong ATP interest in Greece, he said the market “had been untapped for so many years” and left open the possibility of a women’s competition next year.

The tournament, set for November 2-8, was moved from Belgrade to the Greek capital, with Novak Djokovic and his family overseeing the event.

“I am excited to be here. I think it will be one of the best tournaments,” Djordje Djokovic said. “Novak, Stefanos [Tsitsipas], and some of the best players in the world will participate. We are talking about athletes from the Top 50… The event will be broadcast live in 130 countries. We hope a high-level tournament will take place and, afterwards, we will negotiate to host it again.”

Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni praised the tournament as a boost for Greece’s global profile. “It is a springboard for strengthening Greece on the world tennis map… Through this tournament, we will have the opportunity to showcase our monuments and excellent facilities. Sports tourism is a strong driver of development and creates new jobs.”

Hellenic Tennis Federation president Thodoris Glavas called it a “great opportunity for the sport” and thanked Djordje Djokovic’s team, expressing hope the tournament will inspire young players and “remain in Greece for the coming years.”
