California State University, Sacramento has announced the continuation of the Hellenic Research Fellowship Program (HRFP) for 2025-2026, marking its 13th year. The program, the only residential fellowship in Hellenic studies west of the Mississippi, offers scholars and writers-in-residence the opportunity to conduct research using the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection. Fellowships, ranging from $1,500 to $5,000 in reimbursement for travel and living expenses, are open to external researchers/writers worldwide who reside outside a 75-mile radius of Sacramento. Writers-in-residence fellowships, introduced in 2024, support those engaged in creative works related to Hellenic culture.
The Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection, housed within the Donald & Beverly Gerth Special Collections and University Archives, is one of the most significant research collections of its kind, featuring over 83,000 volumes and extensive archives. The collection includes rare books, art, artifacts, and primary sources in multiple languages. Since its inception in 2012, the HRFP has hosted 40 fellows from 12 countries, whose research has contributed to monographs, dissertations, and numerous academic publications.
Fellowships run between two weeks and three months, with the 2025-2026 term available from September 1, 2025, to August 31, 2026. Recipients are responsible for their own travel and accommodation, though discounted on-campus housing is available in the summer. Research Scholars who do not receive a fellowship but wish to conduct self-funded research may apply for a separate appointment.
Applications are due by April 11, 2025, with no late submissions considered.
