‘Continuing Tradition’ – local Greek Orthodox church hosts Gyro Fest to serve the community

SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – Saturday was Siouxland’s last chance to enjoy delicious food from the Gyro Fest drive-up at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the church created the drive-up as a way to keep the community involved in Greek culture.

“Trying to keep alive the culture and those traditions, the traditional food is a way for us to welcome people in, you know, the money from these fundraisers is what keeps this church alive and has kept it alive for over 100 years,” said Andrea Konidas, Co-Chair of Gyro Fest drive-up.

Now, after the pandemic, the drive-up is still continuing the church‘s tradition of keeping the church alive.

Located in the parking lot of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church on 6th St., members of the community lined up to get a taste of all types of delicious Greek dishes on Saturday, Oct. 19.

From traditional gyro sandwiches to spanakopita, church members and volunteers prepared the food as it is being ordered. When the food is fresh and ready to be enjoyed; it is served directly to the customers’ vehicles.

Gyro Fest is a fundraiser for the church and non-profit organizations. The church says it plans to use the money to renovate the church, and the rest will be donated to non-profit organizations.

The church plans on hosting another fundraiser for its Holiday Pastry Sale, for more information click this link.
