COLOUR HAZE on RockOverdose: 30 Years of Heavy Psych Magic Return to Greece | Rock Overdose / Rock

True pillars of the European heavy psychedelic scene, Munich’s Colour Haze return to Greece as the second major headliner of the Heavy Psych Sounds Festival 2026. With over 25 years of activity and 14 albums to their name, they are one of the most influential bands shaping the modern heavy psych sound.

With a warm, organic tone, a jam-oriented approach, and deeply melodic sensibilities, Colour Haze craft immersive sonic landscapes where calm and intensity constantly interplay — from gentle, floating melodies to explosive hard rock peaks. Their latest album, Sacred (2022), showcases their unique ability to blend groove, psychedelia, and emotional depth. Celebrating 30 years as a band this year, their upcoming performances carry even greater significance. We spoke with them about their journey, the evolution of their sound, and what continues to inspire them.

RockOverdose: With over 25 years as a band, what do you feel has remained unchanged at the core of Colour Haze, and what has evolved the most?

COLOUR HAZE: The very early beginnings was different but since 99 the way how we go about playing and how we sound basicly hasn’t changed. Maybe our taste and understanding of music may be more expanded and refined. But basicly everything we do was already there from the beginning. The easy inspiration of youth gets lost with every artist growing older. We try to make up for it working harder and more in detail about composition and arrangement. Well and in the early years I didn’t care too much about the lyrics as long as the words fit the music – now I do.

RockOverdose: Your sound has always had this warm, organic, almost spiritual quality — is that something that comes naturally, or do you consciously pursue it with each release?

COLOUR HAZE: I don’t know if I could say it comes naturally but it’s simply the sound we go after because we like it best for our music.

RockOverdose: You’re often described as one of the most influential bands in the European heavy psych scene. Do you feel part of a “scene,” or have you
always operated more independently?

COLOUR HAZE: We feel part of a big family, bands and fans alike!

RockOverdose: The Heavy Psych Sounds Fest has become a key gathering for the scene. What does it mean to you to perform there?

COLOUR HAZE: We are always happy and grateful to be invited to perform at such gatherings : )

RockOverdose: How do you view the current revival of psych/stoner rock compared to when you first started out in the ‘90s?

COLOUR HAZE: Actually I can’t tell anything about this. For myself I’m in the continuity of our work. I guess it needs a different perspective to notice a revival, that’s up to you : )

RockOverdose: Your live performances often have a strong improvisational,
jam-oriented feel. How much room do you leave for improvisation today
compared to earlier years?

COLOUR HAZE: About the same. We don’t want to bother the audience with attempts but play the best music possible for us to you. Therefore on stage we play compositions that evolved from improvisational content in our rehearsals. We only leave occasionally improvisational passages in our music, mostly solos and even these can condense to a fixed form over time.

RockOverdose: The festival lineup brings together bands from different generations and countries. How important is this kind of cross-generational exchange for the evolution of the scene?

COLOUR HAZE: That’s very important. I’m very grateful that our scene is constantly refreshed by young musicians. If our generation created a frame in which young artists can perform they now just give us back a new frame in which we can keep on going. Not many musical-genres made it to ever renew themselves and connect and incorporate artists and audience of different generations. It’s great to see this happening with the music we love so much.

RockOverdose: You’ve played in Greece multiple times. Is there something about the Greek audience or atmosphere that resonates with you in a special way?

COLOUR HAZE: It’s hard to tell what it is, but I always have a positive impression of all people from Greece we got in touch with. It’s never hard to connect. And our Greek audience is for sure one of the most dedicated and enthusiastic. It’s always a pleasure to play in Greece.

RockOverdose: If you had to shape the ideal Colour Haze festival set, would it
lean more toward a “best of” selection or a continuous, narrative-driven
journey?

COLOUR HAZE: Mhm, I think I can say our recent 30years-tour Live-Set was both at once already. For festivals the compromise is that we have limited stagetime, so with our lengthy songs it’s not easy to round it up both ways.

RockOverdose: After so many albums and years of evolution, what keeps you
inspired — the search for new sounds, or the desire to go deeper into
what you’ve already created?

COLOUR HAZE: Foremost the desire to give a little bit more joy, good vibes, peace and love to the people and the planet, even if it’s just a tiny contribution. On the musical side it’s rather the search for new, different content and ways, a search for the ever new and unheard – even if we fail – but within the sounds we already created. I like the way how we sound very much.

Thank you very much for your time!
