Award-winning filmmaker Christopher Nolan is set to film key scenes for his highly anticipated adaptation of Homer’s “The Odyssey” in Greece’s picturesque Peloponnese. Starring Hollywood heavyweight Matt Damon as the legendary Greek hero, this epic production will showcase iconic locations such as Methoni Castle, Voidokilia Beach, and the archaeological site of Acrocorinth.
Joining Damon in the star-studded cast are Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Elliot Page, and Mia Goth. This ambitious project by the director of “Oppenheimer,” “Dunkirk,” “Inception,” and “The Dark Knight” highlights Nolan’s penchant for visual spectacle.
Scheduled for a summer 2026 release, “Odyssey” is produced by Universal Pictures, with Faliro House Productions’ NAF subsidiary collaborating for the Greek shoot. The film adds to the tradition of adaptations of Homer’s tale, following last year’s “The Return” with Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche.
Excitement is palpable in the Peloponnese, evidenced by a recent large turnout in Kalamata for a casting call for extras. However, the production has faced criticism over historical accuracy, particularly regarding Damon’s helmet seen in promotional materials, which some argue deviates from Homer’s descriptions. As one commentator noted, “The Iliad describes Odysseus with a boar tusk-adorned helmet, but Hollywood opts for the usual ‘broom helmet.’”
