Sixth graders at Center Moriches Middle School had an unforgettable day of learning at the school’s in-house Greek Festival on Friday, February 27, a special event coordinated and planned by sixth grade language and literature teacher Taryn Glynn. The festival served as a hands-on culmination of students’ reading and writing units in Greek mythology, as well as their study of Ancient Greece in social studies and gave students the chance to bring learning to life through creativity, collaboration, and immersive experiences.
Each student produced and presented a project on Greek deities, while teams rotated through interactive stations featuring student-created game rooms, a movie room, a cabin and art museum, a Greek fashion challenge, and a living museum.
The excitement continued in the gymnasium, where Kathryn Ross and Michael Russo led the Greek Olympics with a variety of energetic challenges. The day concluded with a viewing of Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief, an adaptation of the novel students recently read in English class.
“This festival is such a wonderful way for students to connect everything they’ve been learning in the classroom in a fun and interactive way,” said head organizer Ms. Glynn. “Seeing them collaborate, problem-solve, and express their creativity was truly inspiring, and I couldn’t be prouder of their effort and enthusiasm.”
“Events like the Greek Festival highlight the innovative teaching and engaging learning experiences that make Center Moriches Middle School such a special place,” said Melissa Reggio, Center Moriches Middle School Principal. “Our students’ curiosity and creativity were on full display. It was a joy to see them so excited about their learning.”
The Greek Festival was a memorable celebration of immersive learning, leaving students with lasting memories and a deeper appreciation for the wonders of Ancient Greece.
