Celebration of Charlottesville’s Greek community supports emergency responders

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – Greek Fest returned to Charlottesville’s Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church on Friday, November 22.

The event raised funds for the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad.

Greek culture and music were under one roof to support a good cause.

Multiple generations of families made traditional Greek dishes and pastries to share with the Charlottesville Community.

All the money raised supported the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad.

“We want them to feel like they’re a part of our family, and we want to welcome them in,” Father Peter with Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church said.

He says Greek Fest is the closest you’ll get to Greece in Charlottesville.

The star of the show was the food, including baklava, spanakopita, and moussaka.

“The community of Charlottesville has been very supportive of us,” Father Handley said. “It gives us a chance to share a little bit of our culture, our food, our faith.”

While the festival shared Greek Culture with the Charlottesville community, it also benefited the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad.

“They’re very hardworking,” Father Handley said. “We’ve been working on this project for months, and this week has been crunch time. Of course, it all comes together and pays off today. Everybody pitched in.”

Father Handley says he owes it all to the church members who made the event possible.

“There are very dedicated people in the church,” Father Handley said. “Hat’s off to them. This church would not be successful without them.”

Greek Fest will return next fall and will have even more food items to try.
