Australian Hellenic Choir’s ‘A Portrait Of Greece’ Concert In Sydney 2025

The Australian Hellenic Choir is set to captivate audiences with its enchanting concert, A Portrait of Greece, scheduled for Sunday, June 1, 2025, at 4:30 PM at the Sir John Clancy Auditorium, University of New South Wales, Sydney. This vibrant celebration of Greek musical heritage promises an unforgettable experience, blending ancient melodies with modern compositions and showcasing the rich cultural tapestry of Greece.

The concert is divided into two distinct parts, each offering a unique perspective on Greek music and identity. The first part opens with Seikilos’ Epitaph, a hauntingly beautiful melody from 200 BC, regarded as one of the oldest surviving musical compositions in the world. This ancient piece sets the stage for a series of original works commissioned by the choir from Australian-Greek composers. These songs explore the theme of migration, delving into the experiences and emotions of descendants of Greek migrants, resonating deeply with Australia’s multicultural community

The second part takes audiences on a spirited journey through Greece’s diverse musical traditions, featuring beloved Nisiotika (island songs) and Demotika (folk songs). These timeless tunes, filled with passion and nostalgia, will be performed by the choir alongside a 15-piece orchestra, creating a rich, immersive soundscape. Adding to the excitement, the concert will spotlight solo performances by emerging Australian-Greek vocalists, highlighting the next generation of talent within the Greek diaspora.
