Rockdale, NSW – Several prominent members of the Australian Hellenic community were honoured at the recent 14th annual St George Community Awards, hosted by Member for Oatley, Mark Coure MP. The awards recognise outstanding contributions to the local community.
A Commitment to Recognition
Mr Coure emphasized the importance of acknowledging the “unsung heroes” who make the St. George community a vibrant place. He commended volunteers for their dedication and tireless efforts.
AHEPA NSW President Congratulates Honorees
Jim Papanagiotou, President of AHEPA NSW Inc., a volunteer organization established 90 years ago, congratulated all the award recipients, especially those nominated by his association. He highlighted the value of volunteerism and expressed gratitude to everyone who contributes their time and talents.
Award Winners and Their Contributions
- Individual Volunteer Achievement Award:
- Charoulla Themistocleous: A teacher of Modern Greek, a founding member of the Australian Hellenic Educators’ Association, and a key organizer of activities promoting Hellenic history and culture.
- Vasilios Aligiannis: A lifelong devotee of traditional Hellenic music and dance, instructor for the Hellenic Lyceum of Sydney, and owner of a vast collection of traditional costumes and jewellery showcased at various events.
- Multicultural Communities Award: The Australian Hellenic Choir is a multi-cultural and multi-lingual group recognized for its excellence in choral music and charitable contributions to the Australian Hellenic community.
- Community Group Achievement Award: The Hellenic Lyceum of Sydney is known for promoting Hellenic heritage through traditional music, dance, and a collection of authentic costumes displayed at various venues, including the Consulate-General of Greece in Sydney.
- Youth Achievement Award: Kosta Papoulidis was commended for his dedication to the Pontian Association of NSW as a volunteer musician and folkloric dance instructor.
