Australia to host Pavlos Giannakopoulos basketball tournament

For the first time in its history, the Pavlos Giannakopoulos basketball tournament will be held outside of Greece, to be hosted by the Australian National Basketball League (NBL) from September 18 to 22.

Two of the top Euroleague clubs, Panathinaikos Aktor and Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade, as well as two of the top NBL teams, the Sydney Kings and the Adelaide 36ers, will compete in basketball stadiums in Melbourne and Sydney.

On Tuesday, Ambassador Alison Duncan hosted a farewell barbecue with food sourced from Australia for the Panathinaikos basketball team as they prepare for the tournament.

The event was also attended by Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Ioannis Kefalogiannis, Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Yiannis Loverdos and President of the Greece-Australia Parliamentary Friendship Group Athanasios Kavvadas.

In an announcement following the event, the Australian ambassador said that their “Australian basketball friends and large Greek community are eagerly anticipating this historic tournament, which will celebrate sports, tradition, and the unbreakable bonds between our two countries.”
