Australia gets first look at film Stelios with screenings in Melbourne and Sydney

Australian audiences set to get their first look at the highly anticipated film Stelios (Υπάρχω) – a cinematic tribute to the legendary Greek singer Stelios Kazantzidis.

The exclusive preview screenings in Melbourne and Sydney show the powerful and emotional journey of one of Greece’s most beloved musical icons.

Stelios narrates the life of Kazantzidis, tracing his rise from humble beginnings as the child of a Pontic refugee family to his transformation into one of Greece’s most revered voices. The film explores his struggles, triumphs, and the mark he left on Greek music and culture.

Directed by Dimitris Papadimitriou, the film is the fourth highest-grossing Greek film of all time, having surpassed major blockbusters such as The Slayer, Happiness, If…, and El Greco.

The Melbourne screening will also feature an on-screen appearance by renowned artist Christos Mastoras, whose contemporary musical influence continues to honour and celebrate the legacy of Kazantzidis.

Mastoras will share his reflections on the impact of Kazantzidis’ music and how it continues to inspire new generations of artists and audiences.

Director of the Greek Centre Jorge Menidis spoke on the significance of this screening.

“Stelios Kazantzidis’ impact on the cultural landscape of 20th-century Greece is immense—especially for the generations of immigrants and their descendants in the diaspora,” he said in an announcement.

“His inspiring story is intertwined with the magic of his soulful popular music. We are thrilled that our friends at Palace have given us the opportunity to host this special screening ahead of the film’s official release.”

The event includes pre- and post-show drinks, a light supper, and a post-show performance of Kazantzidis’ music by Melbourne band Anagennisi.

The Sydney event will feature a cocktail reception with food provided by Aris Chatzigeorgiou and drinks supplied by Mediterranean Gourmet, followed by an exclusive screening of the film.
