Athens welcomes the fourth edition of the “This is Athens City Festival” on May 1, 2025, ushering spring with a vibrant array of cultural experiences at the city’s historic sites.
Organized by the Athens Municipality and Develop Athens S.A., the city’s Destination Management and Marketing Organization, the festival offers residents and visitors a dynamic showcase of Athens’ cultural identity through June 1.
The month-long program features over 200 free events, including concerts, dance and theater performances, open-air movie screenings, traditional Greek paniyiries, wellness sessions, and children’s activities. “Join us from May 1 to June 1 to experience a lively, springtime Athens,” said Mayor Haris Doukas.
Opening Day at Akadimia Platonos Park
The festival kicks off at Akadimia Platonos (Plato’s Academy) Park with a family-friendly lineup:
- Face Painting (12 p.m. – 6 p.m.): Children enjoy colorful face painting and glitter tattoos.
- Ecological Games (12 p.m. – 3 p.m.): Kids craft wreaths from recycled materials, learn waste sorting, and build microscopes from detergent packaging, blending fun with environmental education.
- Theatrical Performance: The Mystery of Pollen (1 p.m. – 2 p.m.): An engaging play about bees and their role in fruit production.
- DJ Set by Mary Margeli (2 p.m. – 3 p.m.): Live music from Hit 88.9’s Mary Margeli energizes the park.
- Kids Radio Banda (6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.): A live radio session with music and storytelling for young audiences.
Festival Highlights
Iconic locations like Lycabettus Hill, Roman Agora, Amerikis Square, Eleftherias Park, Athens Observatory, and Mitropoleos Square will host diverse events, energizing Athens for summer 2025. Key events include:
- May 3: Full Circle Party, Zappeion Hall (7 p.m. – 11 p.m.): The musical collective Full Circle hosts its “Looking for a Crib” party.
- May 4: Santaroza Beat 2025, Dikaiosynis Square (5:30 p.m. – 11 p.m.): A six-hour electronic and dance music extravaganza featuring Athens’ top DJs and vocalists.
- May 7: Fitness Sessions, Eleftherias Park (6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.): Yoga, Pilates, and aerobics for all fitness levels in a scenic outdoor setting.
- May 11: Fun Vibes Family Festival, Rizari Park (11 a.m. – 8 p.m.): A day of family activities and sports in a lush green park.
- May 15: Conquistadors Art Exhibition, Macart’s Cultural Space (10 a.m. – 6 p.m.): Nikos Kyriakopoulos presents 36 paintings of dragons, beasts, and conquistadors.
- May 18: Alekos Fassianos Museum Tour (11 a.m. – 3 p.m.): A guided tour exploring the life and works of Greek painter Alekos Fassianos.
- May 24: Historical Documentaries, Athens War Museum (11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.): Archival footage of the Balkan Wars, Gallipoli, Battle of Skra, Battle of Crete, and Normandy Landings.
- May 27: Spanish Film Festival, Aello Open-Air Cinema (8 p.m. – 11:30 p.m.): Films from Spain, Chile, Argentina, and Cuba screened under the stars.
