At New Orleans 50th Anniversary Greek Festival, Good Times Rolled

NEW ORLEANS – There weren’t any alligator gyros but plenty of Greek food – and culture – at the New Orleans Greek Festival at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral that marked its 50th anniversary this year.

Louisianans know how to have a good time, especially if they’re Greek too and even cloudy weather couldn’t dampen the spirit as crowds ate and ate and ate, and danced. “It’s also a New Orleans neighborhood festival, popular with everybody, of Greek heritage or not,” said Nola.com.

The Greeks were easier to spot, of course because they know how to pronounce gyro but the report noted that among a crowd at a communal dining table inside the Cathedral auditorium that “nobody was Greek, but everybody was enthusiastically Greek-adjacent.

Holly Zaharis said she’d barely missed the annual event in 40 years. Zaharis, 72, said that her late husband Demitrios had grown up in a neighborhood at the foot of the Acropolis. Though she isn’t Greek, she said, “my feet are definitely Greek.” Let the good feet roll.

Despite the unsettled weather and threatening clouds, Greek-Americans and others from New Orleans were present at the festival. Facebook/New Orleans Greek Festival
