Ancient Temples, Majestic Monuments Spark Contemporary Art Across Greece

Have you ever wondered what it feels like to witness a theatrical performance or a musical recital within the atmospheric embrace of an illuminated ancient monument, under the cypress-scented breeze of a summer night? In Greece, this is what summer culture feels like.

Beyond the world-renowned venues like the Epidaurus Theater and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, the Ministry of Culture’s initiative “All of Greece, One Culture” brings 140 cultural events to 70 archaeological sites across 12 regions of the country—offering the very essence of Greek summer wherever you may be.

Returning for its sixth consecutive year, the Ministry’s flagship summer initiative is set to unfold from July 1 to August 31, 2025, turning Greece’s rich historical landscape into a vibrant stage for contemporary artistic expression. With 70 original productions spanning music, theater, dance, visual arts, performances for young audiences, and music theatre, the program once again invites the public into a collective cultural experience that bridges antiquity with the modern.

A Tribute to Andreas Embirikos: The Past as a Living Presence

This year’s theme, “The Reception of the Past – Today as Tomorrow and as Yesterday”, draws inspiration from the work of surrealist poet and writer Andreas Embirikos, exploring how memory and history shape the present and future. Artists and creative groups are invited to reinterpret the past not as nostalgia, but as a dynamic, living substance—one that feeds artistic expression and provokes reflection on truth, justice, and the role of the individual in society.

Through a hybrid approach of speech, image, sound, and movement, each production promises an immersive experience, while the diversity of genres reinforces the program’s identity as a living laboratory of contemporary creation.

Enriching the Cultural Map

This summer’s edition expands its reach by introducing 13 new archaeological sites, monuments, and museums into its cultural itinerary, including:

  • The Sanctuary of the Great Gods in Samothrace
  • The Mycenaean Acropolis of Agios Andreas in Sifnos
  • The Polycentric Museum of Aigai
  • The Monastery of Toplou in Sitia
  • The Prehistoric Settlement of Akrotiri in Thira
  • The Gynaikokastro Castle in Kilkis
  • The Ioannina Castle, the Rotunda, and the Moni Lazariston in Thessaloniki
  • The Ancient Theatre of Eretria, along with the Archaeological Museums of Volos, Pella, and Ioannina

The main building is designed to become the conceptual gateway to the archaeological site and the history of Aigai, to the history and culture of the Macedonians, but also to the Hellenistic world.

These additions reflect the initiative’s ongoing commitment to cultural decentralization, ensuring that high-quality artistic experiences are accessible beyond Athens.

Supporting Artists, Serving Society

“This institution strengthens and creates favorable conditions for employment for artists and cultural workers,” noted Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni during her official statement. “It forms part of a broader policy that is also supported through Recovery Fund financing and reform programs.”

The National Opera of Greece has once again been entrusted with the program’s organizational and administrative management, under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture and with the crucial support of local Ephorates of Antiquities and archaeologists throughout the country.

Events remain free of charge to the public, with only the standard entrance fee applicable where required for access to archaeological sites. Reservations are mandatory and can be made through the official website: www.allofgreeceoneculture.gr
