RockOverdose: Hello and welcome to Rock Overdose! Since this is the first time interviewing you, I’d like to ask you how Actors came to be and how you eventually got to your current lineup.
ACTORS: This has taken me a lifetime of working through what it means to be a musician. The current lineup was really just a chain of good luck. We are like family now.
RockOverdose: How would you describe Actors to someone who hasn’t listened to a single note of your music?
ACTORS: This is something we get asked by airport staff a lot! I keep it simple and say a cross between The Cure and Depeche Mode but that’s not really correct either. ACTORS is a modern take on post-punk with cinematic synths and dark lyrics.
RockOverdose: How does an Actors song come to life? Is there a main songwriter or is it more of a collaborative process?
ACTORS: I write and produce the songs at my studio Jacknife Sound here in Vancouver. Each member then helps bring the songs to life.
RockOverdose: Although your latest album came out in 2021, you’ve been active lately releasing a number of singles. Is there a new record on the horizon?
ACTORS: It’s been a busy few years. We’ve done a lot of touring. The plan is to release another album when the time comes. I like to take my time to feel out the artistic process. Keeping things true sometimes takes longer. Im big on releasing singles since day one.
RockOverdose: You’ve also done a series of remixes on tracks by various artists of the darkwave scene, including greek act Grey Gallows. How do you approach remixes? Do you listen to a song and you think “I would have done this differently” or do bands contact you to remix their stuff?
ACTORS: Usually a band will reach out. It’s an honour to be asked. I have fun doing remixes. It’s exciting to hear what goes into a song and then reimagine it. There’s always elements to pull and rearrange in new ways.
RockOverdose: I remember watching you on stage at the Death Disco Outdoor Festival back in 2023 in what was probably the hottest day of that summer. Still, that didn’t stop you from putting on great show. Do you have any vivid memories from that day?
ACTORS: That was the first time I got a sunburn on stage! What a fantastic festival. Playing with Sisters of Mercy and She Past Away was a dream. I wouldn’t have changed anything. The crowd in Athens was very welcoming. We’re excited to return.
RockOverdose: Next Saturday, you’ll be playing a more intimate club show in Athens. The concert is already upgraded to a larger venue, so things are looking pretty good. What should we expect from Actors this time around?
ACTORS: We will be playing all our new singles in a full set of all the favourites. Basically twice the show we played at the festival. It’s a more dynamics experience.
RockOverdose: You just came off an American tour in November and now you are embarking on another European trek, before you go back to the States and Canada. This run of concerts will pretty much keep you busy until mid May. How easy is it for a band to pull off such a schedule in 2024?
ACTORS: We have a lot of fun travelling and playing together. That really is the first step to having a successful tour. Eating well and staying healthy is the goal. Playing the shows is like a drug that keeps you wanting more. Connecting to the audiences is an exhilarating experience that keeps you feeling energized.
RockOverdose: Thank you for your time! Last words are yours.
ACTORS: My pleasure! For those of reading that will be at the show. Don’t be shy. We love meeting ACTORS fans.
On behalf of RockOverdose,
Dimitris Soursos
