Founded in 2021 by Greek-Swiss classical music journalist Leni Konialidis to provide opportunities for young talent on the small Saronic island, the Music Academy of the Anargyrios and Korgialenios School of Spetses (MAAKSS) has been life-changing for many of its pupils, opening pathways that would have never been possible without the high-quality instruction and access provided by world-class musicians. Konialidis first visited Spetses in 2019, stumbling on the historic Anargyrios and Korgialenios School while scouting for a location for her son’s wedding. “This place is truly ideal; I can see it so clearly,” she remembers telling her son – and she wasn’t talking about the wedding. The inaugural concerts were almost entirely volunteer-led, but they sparked momentum. The following year, seven professors and 70 students from around the world joined.
