Audiences in Melbourne will be treated to a celebration of as a landmark concert that honours the centenary of composer Mimis Plessas.
Acclaimed performers and a full orchestral will to pay tribute to Plessas a composer whose work shaped modern Greek musical culture at the Melbourne Recital Centre’s Elizabeth Murdoch Hall on Sunday May 31.
Greek vocalist Dimitris Basis, whose expressive voice has earned him wide recognition will provide his own rendition of Plessas’s classics. And the orchestra will play under the baton of renowned conductor George Ellis.
Born in Athens in 1924, Plessas was a talent whose career spanned performance, composition and conducting. A piano prodigy, he rose quickly through the ranks of Greece’s musical world, becoming a soloist at the National Radio Foundation before earning international acclaim, including a top-five ranking among pianists in the United States in the early 1950s.
Yet it was as a composer that Plessas left an permanent cultural mark. With music for more than 100 films and over 70 theatrical productions, his output helped define the soundscape of post-war Greece. His songs — including classics such as “Pios to xerei” and “Tha pio apopse to feggari” — remain deeply embedded in the cultural memory of generations.

Plessas’ collaborations with artists such as Nana Mouskouri, Marinella and Giannis Poulopoulos, produced a catalogue that seamlessly blended contemporary progressive and laïkó urban folk traditions. His 1969 album O Dromos remains the best-selling record in Greek discography history.
Plessas died in October 2024, days before his 100th birthday, and left behind a legacy that continues to inspire musicians and audiences alike.
For Basis, whose own career has seen him perform works by Greece’s most revered composers including Mikis Theodorakis, the tribute is personal and artistic. From his early training in Byzantine music to performances across Greece, Basis built a reputation for interpreting the Greek musical canon with depth and authenticity.
Conductor George Ellis brings a wealth of experience to the production, he has led performances in major cities around the world and played a prominent role in international events including the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
Together, these artists will guide audiences through a rich program celebrating Plessas’ timeless melodies — a body of work that continues to bridge generations and speak to the heart of Greek identity.
This centenary tribute is a celebration of a composer, and recognition of a cultural force whose music continues to echo across decades — and across continents.
