Pericles documentary: the Athenian statesman of the Golden Age, democracy, the Parthenon, the Delian League, Sparta and the Peloponnesian War.
After his rival Cimon was ostracised in 461 BC, Pericles came to dominate Athenian politics. A descendant of the powerful Alcmaeonid family on his mother’s side, he backed democratic reforms, oversaw the Delian League’s transformation into an Athenian empire and championed the building programme on the Acropolis that produced the Parthenon. His partner Aspasia and the sculptor Phidias were among his circle. In the Peloponnesian War with Sparta he gave the Funeral Oration recorded by Thucydides, and he died of the plague that struck Athens in 429 BC.

Stop your propaganda because if you had the democracy of Ancient Athens today at least half of you would be exiled!
Eklisia also means church
A Great man. His vision was undermined, as others have been, by outside forces and:
(1) Inaccessibility for the rural voters to vote, allowing urban voters disproportionate influence.
(2) Elites subverting public interests to their own ends.
(3) A tyrnany of the uninformed and easily influenced majority.
I love this series! I have learned so much history from watching these videos.
Pericles is a fascinating figure I am glad to have learned more about in this video. A man whom I regard as one of the greatest and most memorable Athenians of all time. Listened to a reading of his funeral oration earlier, made some of the judgements you pointed out, wonderful piece of oratory.
I’ve been waiting for this. Another great video. Thank you.
@PeopleProfiles I really hope you see this, I've subscribed for a while and love your videos. Just so you know, @WarStoriesChannel is uploading your work as their own, their "Amon Goth" vidéo is a reupload of yours.
I loved how this video connects the glory of the Athenian Golden Age with its darker side: imperialism, ostracism, and a brutal plague that killed Pericles and so many others.
Pericles is the archetype of the political leader, leaving his mark across the centuries.
It is a book about this period i read and i very nice
