NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University Athletics Department took 38 student-athletes to The Cradle of Western Civilization this summer for a study abroad experience throughout Greece. The student-athletes were given the opportunity to explore a variety of landmarks across Greece while also participating in lectures to learn about different sports and cultural experiences.
Tulane professor Marcus Coleman led the student-athletes through a curriculum for their sociology of sport class during the trip. Multiple guest lectures throughout the trip also contributed to the class structure covering topics. The guest lectures featured soccer and basketball executive discussing the professional sports structure in Greece and Europe and Olympiacos BC talking about marketing and business.
Beyond the lectures the Green Wave student-athletes toured three cities in Spain making stops in Nafpilo, Athens, and Heraklion on the island of Crete. The student-athletes had the opportunity to experience the local culture in each city through several tours, a pair of cooking classes, and a Greek Soccer League match between OFI Crete and Volos. The tours ranged from walking tours of the Ancient Olympia Archeological Site & Museum in Ancient Olympia and the Acropolis Museum and Parthenon in Athens to a day cruise of the Saronic Islands to a tour of Panathenaic Stadium and much more.
