HOUSTON, TX – The spirit of ‘parea’ – the timeless Greek tradition that draws joy from good conversation, food, and drinks – came fully alive on May 6 at the renowned Houston restaurant YiaYia’s Pappas Greek Kitchen. The evening was hosted by Alexis Argyroplou, Evie Pappas, and Lea Soupata.
In collaboration with the National Hellenic Society (NHS), they welcomed members and distinguished guests to an evening that combined social celebration with cultural mission. The gathering began with a prayer by Fr. Efstratios Manoulias, presiding priest of the Annunciation Church in Houston.
The event served as a vital bridge to the future, as longtime members introduced prospective new members to the vision of one of the leading Greek organizations in the United States. The highlight of the evening was a speech by Soupata, president of the NHS, who shared the story of the organization’s founding. The NHS was established 14 years ago by a group of visionary Greek-American leaders – George Berhakis, George Markos, George Stamas, and the late George Korkos – and was built on a foundation of service and social responsibility.

“Members of the National Hellenic Society have demonstrated through action the values and ideals the Society stands for: service to our fellow citizens, to the communities where we live, and to our nation,” Soupata noted during her remarks.
Keeping the Greek spirit alive beyond social connections, the event also underscored the NHS’s serious commitment to cultural preservation. As a nonprofit organization, the Society focuses its resources on promoting the classical Greek ideals born in ancient Greek democracy and still vital today, such as the pursuit of knowledge and the arts.

The Society’s impact is felt nationwide through its key pillars:
- Heritage Greece & Heritage America: These flagship programs already count more than 1,000 alumni. The Heritage Greece program offers students a two-week immersive experience in Greece that includes language and dance lessons, visits to archaeological sites, and exposure to modern Greek industries such as energy, shipping, and technology.
- Educational Grants: Support for university programs and films – such as ‘Greek Guide to Greatness’ – that highlight Greek history and philosophy.
- Mentoring the Next Generation: Serving as a beacon to ensure that appreciation for Greek heritage is passed on to young people throughout the United States.
As the evening drew to a close amid the warm, aromatic atmosphere of YiaYia’s Kitchen, the message was clear: the National Hellenic Society is more than a professional network – it is a family.
President Soupata also spoke about the upcoming NHS Heritage Weekend, held annually during Columbus Day weekend. This year’s gala will take place in Washington and will serve a dual purpose: honoring the founders of the NHS and celebrating the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States.
