Greece’s Maria Prevolaraki claimed the silver medal in the 53 kg category at the European Wrestling Championships, held in Tirana, after a narrow 2-1 defeat to Ukraine’s Maria Yefremova in the final.
Prevolaraki, who had won gold at last year’s European Championships in Bratislava, adding to her tally of four silver and four bronze medals, took an early 1-0 lead after her opponent received a warning, but Yefremova responded in the second period, scoring two points to move ahead.
Despite a strong effort from the Greek champion, she was unable to overturn the deficit and had to settle for second place, missing out on a consecutive European gold medal.
Prevolaraki, one of Greece’s most accomplished wrestlers, has consistently been among the top competitors in her category at European and world level.
