A musical tribute honoring the late Greek composer Mimis Plessas will take place May 22 at Adelaide Town Hall in South Australia.
The concert, titled “100 Years of Mimis Plessas: A Live Tribute with Dimitris Basis,” is scheduled to begin at 7.30 p.m. and is organized by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia.
Singer Dimitris Basis will headline the event, bringing Plessas’ extensive body of work to life. He will be joined by Greek-Australian conductor George Ellis and Maria Yiakoulis, a flautist and vocalist. The performance will feature a full symphony orchestra along with traditional Greek instruments.
Plessas, who died in 2024 at age 99, was one of Greece’s most prolific and influential composers. His work blended the traditions of entechno and laiko and became a defining part of modern Greek popular culture.
Over a career spanning decades, Plessas performed as a piano soloist and conductor while composing hundreds of songs. He collaborated with many of Greece’s leading performers and wrote music for more than 100 films and 70 theatrical productions.
His music remains especially popular among Greek diaspora communities worldwide, where his songs continue to resonate across generations. [Combined reports]
