Thousands are expected to pay their final respects to Marinella, as the body of the iconic performer lies in state in central Athens ahead of her funeral later today.
The public viewing began early in the morning and will continue until 13:00, allowing fans to say goodbye to one of the most influential voices in modern Greek music. The funeral service is scheduled for 14:00, while the burial will take place in a private ceremony attended by close family members.
A nation bids farewell
The late singer, widely regarded as one of Greece’s most celebrated performers, passed away on March 28 at the age of 87. Her death followed a long period of declining health after suffering a severe stroke in September 2024.
During that incident, she collapsed on stage while performing at a major open-air concert venue in Athens and was rushed to hospital, where she remained in critical condition for months. Although she was later discharged, her health never fully recovered.
Public tribute and family request
In an official statement, her family confirmed the funeral arrangements and invited the public to attend the viewing. They also requested that, instead of sending wreaths, donations be made to a charity supporting children with serious illnesses.
