The great singer passed away at the age of 87 after complications from a stroke.
Renowned Greek singer Marinella has passed away at the age of 87, following the consequences of a severe stroke she suffered in 2024.
The news was announced by her family through a statement, stating that the artist passed away at her home on March 28, 2026 at 6:00 PM.
Marinella, whose real name was Kyriaki Papadopoulou, suffered a stroke on September 25, 2024 during a concert in Herodion, Athens. While performing the song “Ego ki esi,” she suddenly collapsed on stage, causing shock among the audience and the entire country.
After the incident, she was treated for a long time in a private clinic in the northern suburbs of Athens. After being discharged from the hospital, she stayed at home under the care of her family, and for about a year and a half she had no contact with her surroundings.
Born on May 20, 1938 in Thessaloniki, Marinella showed a passion for music from an early age. She began performing on the music scenes of Thessaloniki in the late 1950s and in 1957 moved to Athens, where she began collaborating with renowned composers.
In 1964, she married singer Stelios Kazantzidis, with whom she achieved some of the greatest successes of the time, although their marriage lasted until 1966.
After the breakup, Marinella built a successful solo career and consolidated herself as one of the most important voices in Greek music. She performed works by renowned composers such as Manos Hadjidakis, Stavros Xarhakos and Mimis Plessas.
In 1973, she presented the first “one-woman show” in Greece, bringing a new artistic format that combined music with stage performance.
During her career spanning more than six decades, she released over 40 albums and collaborated with renowned names such as Giorgos Dalaras, Haris Alexiou and Antonis Remos. Among her most popular songs are “Synora i agapi den gnorizei”, “Stalia stalia” and “Den einai pou fevgeis”.
In 1974, he represented Greece at Eurovision with the song “Krasi, thalassa kai t’ agori mou”.
With a long career and great influence, Marinella is considered one of the most important figures in modern Greek music, leaving behind a lasting artistic legacy.
