KOMOTINI, Greece — Athanasios “Sakis” Pragalos, one of the most influential leaders in Taekwondo globally and current vice president of World Taekwondo, will receive the “Nikos Samaras” Award in Greece this May, a distinction that extends beyond the specific sphere of martial arts and places him on a broader scale of recognition within sports governance.
The news is significant not only because of the award itself. What is truly relevant is the origin of the recognition. It does not come from an internal Taekwondo body or a federation ceremony, but from the 34th International Congress on Physical Education & Sport Science, one of Greece’s most prominent academic and sporting events, affiliated with the Democritus University of Thrace.
That detail completely changes the scope of the announcement. Pragalos will not be honored solely as president of the European Taekwondo Union, a position he has held for over 25 years, but as a figure whose impact on the sport has been recognized beyond the usual political boundaries of Taekwondo. The congress organizers themselves highlighted his multifaceted and enduring contribution to strengthening the sport and its institutional standing.
The “Nikos Samaras” Award also holds unique symbolic significance in Greece. It was created in memory of the legendary volleyball player Nikos Samaras, who passed away in 2013, and is awarded annually to individuals who have left their mark on the sport. In previous editions, it has honored Olympic champions, Paralympic athletes, and leading figures in the Greek sports movement, placing Sakis Pragalos in a lineage of honorees that transcends any narrow sectoral interpretation.
For European Taekwondo, this recognition also serves as an external validation of leadership. Pragalos was not only reelected in 2025 to lead the ETU, but from that position he consolidated an even greater presence within World Taekwondo, where he now serves as vice president. This trajectory gave Europe a stronger voice in the international structure and reinforced the idea that the continent not only produces elite athletes but also leadership cadres with real influence in global decision-making.
From a journalistic perspective, the award serves as more than a personal celebration. It showcases Pragalos as a leader capable of earning legitimacy on three fronts simultaneously: within Taekwondo, in his country’s Olympic framework, and now also in an academic-sports sphere that recognizes career achievements, vision, and leadership ability.
The ceremony will take place during the official opening of the congress on May 15, 2026, in Komotini. There, the ETU’s top leader will be honored in a setting that will likely go beyond a mere ceremonial gesture: for many within European sports, it will be further confirmation that he has ceased to represent merely a continental union and has become one of the most politically influential figures within the international Taekwondo ecosystem.
