Cyprus Community of Melbourne’s Halloumi Festival returns this weekend


The Cyprus Community of Melbourne and Victoria’s Board of Directors declares it is ready to welcome visitors this weekend to the 6th two-day Halloumi Festival at its premises in Brunswick.

A festival that combines a tour of the island’s folk tradition, with flavours, sound, melody and a free halloumi tasting.

The doors will open on Saturday and Sunday at 12 noon. According to the organisers, there is something for everyone, from halloumi making to entertainment programs.

More specifically, groups from Oakleigh Grammar, the Greek school of the Panhellenic College, the dance ensembles Aristotle Florinas, Panagia Soumela, Akrites tou Pontos and Anemones have been invited and will present Cypriot and Greek dances, while artists Tasos Theofanous and Valia Gianinska will entertain with well-known and beloved Greek songs.

The “Children’s Corner” will be set up again this year and the presentation of the children’s book by educators Niki Farfara-Paschou and Peni and Ourania Papageorgiou: ‘Let’s Go to the Cyprus Festival’ will take place.

The book will be presented on Saturday afternoon by the High Commissioner of the Republic of Cyprus, Antonis Sammoutis.

Charitini Tryfonos will recite about her grandmother’s halloumi, while the Community’s dance group, under the direction of dance teacher Nicole Kyriakidis, is preparing a musical and dance performance with live music and songs, both on Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

As always, the AETOS orchestra will also showcase their talents.

The program for both days will close with the well-known artists Stavrina Dimitriou and Yannis Spantsios, accompanied by Pantelis Krestas on bouzouki and Christos Nikolaidis on keyboards.

The stalls will sell souvlakia, sheftalies, loukoumades, fasting dishes, coffee, drinks, etc. For immediate service, the president informs that a large number of volunteers have been recruited who are ready to serve you.

There will also be various stands with Cypriot and imported products and vendors with selected gift items.

CCMV President Theo Theophanous extended a warm “κοπιάστε” and promises everyone will have a wonderful time.
