A Wake-Up They’ll Never Forget

They danced until they lost themselves.
Their cries pierced the night.
But that morning… they awoke on the ground, in the rival city.
Painted in 1887 by Lawrence Alma-Tadema, this scene captures a rare moment: Maenads, followers of Dionysus, waking up after a night of trance in the rival city of Amphissa. These women, deep in ritual celebration, wandered beyond sacred boundaries. But instead of being punished, they are protected by the women of the city.
In Greek mythology, Maenads took part in Dionysian rituals where they entered trance through dance, wine, and music. Wearing animal skins and ivy crowns, armed with thyrsi (sacred staffs), they embodied the fusion of wild nature and divine ecstasy.
Sometimes, in these states, they performed sparagmos (tearing apart a live prey) followed by omophagia (eating its raw flesh), a symbolic act of union with Dionysus.
But here, Alma-Tadema doesn’t show the fury. He paints the aftermath: the calm, the vulnerability… and the humanity of an unexpected gesture.
