When you think of Arby’s, there’s a good chance that the Roast Beef Sandwich—the chain’s signature menu item—comes to mind. And since Arby’s does indeed “have the meats,” the fast food restaurant also offers an extensive menu beyond the signature sandwich, including chicken, ham, and turkey. While fans have come to appreciate the chain’s curly fries, cheesesteaks, and specialty sauces, there’s one sandwich in particular that folks agree is one of the most underrated items on Arby’s menu.
Some argue that it’s even better than a restaurant.
What Makes Arby’s Gyro So Good?
It’s probably safe to assume that, when you’re craving a gyro, you’re heading to a Mediterranean restaurant, stopping by a local food truck, or maybe even grabbing the sandwich from a Greek diner. But according to fast food fans, you may be overlooking…Arby’s? On a recent Reddit thread debating if Arby’s is “underrated and over-hated,” many Redditors flocked to the comments to mention just how great the chain’s gyro is.
“Many of you will laugh at this, but I actually think the gyros at Arby’s are pretty darn good,” one fan shared. “I absolutely love their gyros,” wrote another Redditor. “For as much as some people like to slag on Arby’s, their gyros are way overlooked.”
“I will defend their Greek gyro all day,” another Redditor chimed in. “I love gyros and theirs is comparable to the gyros I get from the real Greek/Mediterranean places where you can see them slicing meat off of the skewers.”
Arby’s take on the gyro, which used to be available in a turkey version but is currently only available with roast beef, is pretty non-traditional—yet still delicious according to fans. While a traditional gyro typically contains spit-roasted gyro meat with tzatziki, white onion, and tomato in a pita, Arby’s spin features knife-carved gyro-style roast beef meat with lettuce, tomato, and red onion in a warm pita bread slathered with creamy tzatziki. And some taste-testers argue that the fast food chain’s version tastes better than a traditional Greek gyro.
Other Arby’s fans on Reddit agree. “I have definitely had a few gyros from Mediterranean spots that were worse than the ones at Arby’s,” reported one Redditor on another thread about the fast food chain’s take on the sandwich. Beyond comparisons to Greek and Mediterranean restaurants, taste-testers argue that the Arby’s gyro is “pretty fire.”
“The Arby’s gyro is an S-tier fast food item and stands alone in its space,” wrote one Redditor in another thread, before giving the fast food sandwich a rating of “five forks.”
“I tried it today based on this post, and good lord it is phenomenal,” commented a new fan.
If the reviews are any indication, you may want to head to your local Arby’s and try the gyro for yourself. Plus, with a price of 2 for $7 at select locations, it can’t really get better than that—until you pair it with Arby’s curly fries, of course.
